Robert G. Mitchell, of Macomb Settlement Rd. Clayton passed away Friday evening at his home under the care of family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Robert was born May 27, 1931 in Watertown the son of H. Leigh and Ethel Allen Mitchell. He graduated from Chaumont High School in 1948.
On August 14, 1955 he married Dawn Paul. Together they developed a fine herd of quality Jersey cows with much hard work.They were veryproud of that herd. Robert also through the years worked for the State Highway Department and was a tradesman with George Bros. in Chaumont. Upon retirement, Robert was fondly known as the “ paperboy” for the Watertown Daily Times in the area. Dawn passed away in 2013.
Robert enjoyed farming and being a part of a once thriving farming community. He had a great love for his John Deere tractors and working the land.He enjoyed many hours of listeningto bluegrass music from many artists. Telling jokes and stories from his long life of experiences brought great pleasure and amusement to all through the years. Feeding the dogs from the dinner table also brought him great glee when he was told not to do so. For that, all dogs who lived here or came to visit loved him.
He is survived by three children: Connie Mitchell of Clayton, Colin and Tina Mitchell of LaFargeville, Carrie Mitchell of Clayton and his daughter-in-law Heather Mitchell of Harrisville. Grandchildren include: Summer Elliott, Dayna Elliott, Nathan Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, Michael Simmons, Paul Mitchell, Jasmine Kimbrough and Haylee Nisbet. Great grandchildren are Alexander Dimanopoulos, Andreas Dimanopoulos, Ada Kimbrough.
He has a sister-in-law Jeanne Mitchell of Three Mile Bay whose husband Allen passed away in 2015.
A son Craig Mitchell passed away in April.
A memorial service will be held at October 14th at 11:00 am at the Johnson Funeral Home.
