Marie C. Burke (94), formerly of Sackets Harbor, New York died February 16, 2017.The daughter of the late George Cowton and the late Elise Gagnaire Cowton, Mrs. Burke was born in Newburgh, N.Y. and attended schools in that area. She graduated from Lennox Hill Hospital Nursing School in New York City in 1943. She was affiliated with the Neurological Institute of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Association. After graduation she became Charge Nurse of the Gynecology Division at Lennox Hill Hospital. During World War II she received recognition from the Federal Security Agency of the U.S. Public Health Service as instructor of the members of the new U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps.
After leaving New York City, Mrs. Burke was employed by A. Barton Hepburn Hospital in Ogdensburg, N.Y. After moving to the Watertown area she was employed by Mercy Hospital and became Charge Nurse of one of the surgical units when the new North Wing of the hospital opened. For a short period she was Office Nurse for Dr. A.J. Flood, a local Watertown surgeon.
Mrs. Burke married Laurence B. Burke on Jan. 17, 1943 at St. John the Baptist Church in New York City. He died in April 2007. They both enjoyed sailing Lake Ontario and lived aboard their boat during the summer months. Mrs. Burke was one of the co-founders of the Navy Point Association.
Surviving Mrs. Burke are two daughters, Margaret (husband Raymond) Bulson of Cuba, N.Y., and Patricia (husband Michael) Easley of Charlotte, N.C. She is also survived by five grandsons, one granddaughter, 10 great grandsons, and four great granddaughters.
