James J. Grant, Jr., 80, Chaumont, husband of Carol J. Grant, passed away peacefully at home on July 22, 2019. He was surrounded by all of his family and very close friends, Roy and Joann Perry. He had been under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
James was born April 22, 1939 in Watertown, New York, son of the late James, Sr. and Rose Grant. He attended Watertown High School and served in the U.S. Air Force.
He married Carol J. (Pound) Grant, November 8, 1968 at Immaculate Conception Church, Brownville, New York. Their attendants were Jane Pound, Watertown, NY and Jon Grant, Brownville, New York. They have four daughters: Jannell (Rob) Pickeral, Brownville, NY, Laurie (Troy) Eves, Chaumont, NY,Nicole (Michael) Marks, Brownville, NY and Erika Grant, Watertown, NY. He and his wife also enjoy five grandchildren: Robert Pickeral Jr., (23), Carson Pickeral (17), Mallory Marks (16), Olivia Eves (14),and Colden Marks (12). James is also survived by a sister Joanne Urban of Watertown, and two brothers Joseph (Christine) Grant of Palm Coast ,FL, and Jon Grant of Brownville. Extended family includes Cheryl Winters and Carol Bennett, Texas. He also adored several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local 58, Pulaski Street, Syracuse, New York for fifty-six years.
James was a humble man who gave selflessly to family and friends. His hobbies included flying planes, hunting, fishing, cooking and his 1950 Ford coupe. He also enjoyed woodworking, to include making lighthouses and personalized wooden bowls for those he loved. However, most important to him was watching his five grandchildren play sports. He could always be found at one of the General Brown fields or gyms at an athletic event. Although his daughters were Daddy’s girls, they took a minor back seat to those five grandchildren. He was “Dad” and “Papa” to so many of their friends.
Upon his request there will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will take place Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, Arsenal Street, Watertown, New York.
