Lawrence N. Carpenter, Watertown, NY, passed away on October 13, 2017 at Samaritan Summit Village surrounded by his family.
Born on April 7, 1935 in Watertown, a son of Russell B. and Beatrice Covey Carpenter, he attended North Junior School and graduated from Hounsfield (Sackets Harbor) Central School in 1954.
He married Roberta A. Colman, Rodman, on October 20, 1956 at the Rodman Congregational Church with the Reverend John Wetzel officiating. They lived all their married life in Sackets Harbor until moving to Samaritan Summit Village in 2014.
Mr. Carpenter enjoyed sports, NASCAR and spending time with his family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Sackets Harbor Lions Club where he became president and later in charge of the annual Easter Plant Sale. He was in the Naval Reserves and served on the U.S.S. Perry.
He worked at the New York Air Brake in Watertown as an expediter. Mr. Carpenter worked at Model Home Accessories, Watertown, as a driver and stock clerk. In the 1970’s, he owned and operated, with his wife, the Sackets Harbor Fruit Juice Company. They bottled and delivered the juice throughout the tri-county area. He also delivered the Syracuse Post Standard newspapers, and freight for Air Freight Expediters throughout the north country. Mr. Carpenter then worked at Walmart until he retired in 1999.
Surviving besides his wife of 61 years, are three daughters and sons-in-law: Denise and Howard Pope, St. Regis Falls; Linda and Thomas Stoffel, Chaumont; Peggy and Thomas Liptrott, Sackets Harbor; two sons and daughters-in-law: Larry and Lori, Rodman; Scott and Tanya, Adams. Also surviving is a sister, Jean Fitzgerald, Adams; a sister-in-law Phyllis Russell, a brother-in-law Wesley (Mary Ann) Colman, and a brother-in-law Winfield Colman, all of Rodman. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Stacey (Andy) Burns, Watertown; Diana Liptrott (Rick Bice), Dexter; Russell Edmonds, Watertown; Emily Harris (Igor Mistalov), Roanoke, VA; Thomas (Tracy) Liptrott II, Brownville; Holly (Matt) Rogers, Adams Center; Christopher Carpenter (Lisa Miles), Adams Center; and Joel Carpenter (Andrea Velasquez), Adams. Also, 14 great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews. A great-granddaughter, Shelby Harris, predeceased him.
Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Calling hours will be on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 4pm-8pm. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Johnson Funeral Home at 11:00am. Burial will follow funeral at Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor. A celebration of life will be held at Sackets Harbor American Legion directly following the burial.
