Walter “Mike” Johnson, 82, of Dexter, NY, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family while under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
He was born on August 27, 1941, in Watertown, New York, to the late Harry and Beverly (Doane) Johnson. Mike graduated from General Brown High School and served in the Navy Reserves from 1962 to 1966.
Mike had several jobs including Knowlton Brothers Paper Company in Watertown, he was a welder at Hall's Ski Lift, a car salesman at Carolyn Pontiac, and briefly worked at Nine Mile Point. His lifelong career however was at Niagara Mohawk, where he worked until his retirement in September 2004 retiring as a Service Representative.
On December 7, 1968, Mike married Carole A. Foote, who predeceased him in 2018.
Following retirement, he worked at the Rustic Golf Course pro shop for several years. He enjoyed motorcycling, golfing, hunting, and watching drag racing. He and Carole also enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years following their retirement.
Mike is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Rick (Jean) Johnson, Norwood, NY, Karin Cronk, Warsaw, NY, Linda (Michael) O’Connor, Carthage, NY, Mark (Helen) Johnson, Orlando, FL, Susan (Robert) Joanette, Dexter, NY, Jennifer (Todd) O’Donnell, Pensacola, FL, and Jared Johnson, Dexter, NY; a sister Linda Rivera of Griffin, Georgia, two brothers and their wives, Ralph (Sue) Johnson of Edgewater, Florida, and John (Lori) Johnson of Cape Coral, Florida; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews
He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Carole A. Johnson, and brothers Harry and Richard Johnson.
Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Dexter. There will be no services. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Brookside Cemetery.
